Observer self-distancing
Describe an event from an external observer perspective.
Research-supported underlying process · evidence grade B/A
Where it comes from
Experimental research by Ethan Kross and Özlem Ayduk.
What the evidence says
Taking an observer’s perspective can reduce emotional reactivity and allow reflection without as much rumination.
When it helps
Post-meeting replay, shame, anger and confusion.
Offered in the app for: Post-meeting rumination
Try it
- Picture the meeting from the far side of the room. What would an observer write down?
- Describe what an impartial observer could verify, without deciding anyone’s motives.
Watch out
- It shouldn’t become emotional detachment from something that needs action.
- Do not substitute detachment for necessary action.
