Fogging
Acknowledge a limited legitimate point without accepting an exaggerated claim.
Practitioner communication technique · evidence grade C
Where it comes from
Also from Manuel J. Smith’s assertiveness training.
What the evidence says
Acknowledge a limited truth without accepting an exaggerated conclusion. Support comes from broader assertiveness work, not trials of fogging itself.
When it helps
Criticism that mixes a real point with an overgeneralization.
Offered in the app for: Guilt or loyalty pressure
Try it
- Find the 5% you can safely acknowledge, and stop there.
- Find a point you can actually verify. Acknowledge only that point, without accepting a larger allegation.
Example
“You’re right that the draft arrived late. The analysis itself is complete.”
Watch out
- Careless wording can accidentally validate a false allegation.
- Do not concede facts you know are false.
