Assertiveness and priority requests

Ask clearly for objective tradeoffs and workable conditions.

Research-supported underlying process · evidence grade B

Where it comes from

A broad behavioral tradition; Manuel J. Smith helped popularize structured assertiveness training.

What the evidence says

A meta-analysis found structured assertive communication training improved speaking up; a workplace trial of communication skills improved problem-solving communication.

When it helps

Requests, disagreements, prioritization and correcting inaccuracies.

Offered in the app for: Unclear ownership · Micromanagement · Conflicting urgent priorities · Excessive workload · Ordinary disagreement

Try it

  • State the constraint, then ask which priority or deadline can move.
  • State the work constraint and ask which priority or deadline can move.

Example

“I can take this on. Which current priority should move?”

Watch out

  • Power differences can make even perfect assertiveness insufficient or costly.
  • A manager may still retaliate; communication alone cannot prevent that.
